Ninth Grade Admission

Applicants are only considered for one school. Applications will be received after September 1 of the applicants' eighth-grade year. Applicants and parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must have attended an information session for the school of application. Eighth-grade applicants must be full-time residents of Monmouth County at the time of the application deadline. Monmouth County residents attending school outside of the county must have verification of Monmouth County residency from the out-of-couty school. Applications must be received in the district central office prior to the application deadline as established annually by the office of the Superintendent. Applications must be complete and supporting materials must be included. 

Supporting materials include:

a. Grade transcript

b. Signed application by eighth-grade school official 

c. Documentation of interest in program provided in the specialized school

Acceptance Criteria:

Applicants will be ranked according to the following scoring:

7th grade (final grade) - maximum rating of 15

8th grade (first quarter) - maximum rating of 15

District admission exam (math) - maximum rating of 35

District admission exam (writing/language arts) - maximum rating of 35

Total possible score: 100

Minimum score for admission: 75

The ratings for english/languge arts, mathematics, social studies, and science are as follows:

100-98, A+ = 15 83-82, C+ = 9

97-94, A = 14 81-78, C = 8

93-92, A- = 13 77-76, C- = 7

91-90, B+ = 12 75-74, D+ = 6

89-86, B = 11 73-72, D = 5

85-84, B- = 10 71-70, D- = 4

Acceptance Process: 

If space does not permit acceptance of all qualified applicants, selection is made on the following considerations:

a. The highest-scoring applicant from each district pool will be offered admission. District pool is the resident public school, excluding regional high school districts, that an application resides in at the time of application. The remaining students are offered admission based on their overall composite score, regardless of resident district.

b. In an effort to achieve gender and ethnic balance, additional admission offers may be made to qualified applicants.

Does the Monmouth County Vocational School District endorse test companies?

No. Please note that the Monmouth County Vocational School District does not endorse, nor has an affiliation with, any company/organization soliciting students to take a review class or practice exam in order to prepare them for the MCVSD Career Academy Admission Test.

What is tested on the MCVSD Career Academy Admission Test?

Please refer to the NJDOE Student Learning Standards. The exam consists of multiple-choice mathematics and language arts questions and is aligned to the NJ Student Learning Standards.

Is the same entrance exam given each year?

MCVSD uses a different exam each year, based on NJ Student Learning Standards.

When and how will I be notified of my admission decision?

Applicants will receive an email informing them when the admission decision is available on during the 1st week of March. Applicants will log into their account to view the decision. 

How will I make arrangements for transportation and tuition?

All transportation and tuition costs are the responsibility of the resident district. The Resident District Transportation Department will determine the type of route for students enrolled in an MCVSD program.

Am I eligible to participate in sports at my home high school?

Yes. The resident district is not required to provide transportation to/from practice/events.

Do I need Algebra I in middle school to apply/attend?

No, however, students may need to take a summer course through MCVSD before attending.

I would like to attend an information session at multiple schools. Do I need to have a record of attendance each time?

Yes. Complete the registration form at the conclusion of each information session so there is a record of your attendance. You may only register for one information session per school, and you can only apply to one school.

Tenth Grade Admission

Application Process:

Students must be a full-time resident of Monmouth County at the time of the application process. Student must have successfully completed one year of a foreign language offered at the school they are applying. Student will be required to take a mathematics exam at the math level they are currently enrolled in and a language arts exam. Application available after March 1. Accepted student may be required to do summer course work or supplemental assignments. Applications must be complete with all supporting materials by May 1 for the following school year. 

Supporting materials include:

a. Grade transcript through the third marking period of ninth grade

b. Standardized test scores (not part of rubric)

c. Documentation of interest in program provided in the specialized school

Acceptance Process:

A limited number of students will be considered for acceptance into tenth grade levels based upon individual applications and availability of space. The highest scoring qualified applicant(s) will be offered admission as a transfer pupil if space is available based on grades and exam. All appropriate applicants will be considered regardless of resident district. Non-accepted applicants will be kept on file through September of the school year for which they apply. If openings occur, they will be reviews for possible acceptance.
